Questions:
1. What is your back story of becoming a local artist, anyone inspire you to pursue this path?
A: It definitely helped to have people around me who shared the same passion for music. One of them being my best friend who was the one who pushed me to write rhymes and is the one who makes the majority of my beats today. So big up to Jollibeats for that. I knew right away this was what I wanted to do when we had our first performance at a high school during a field trip. We were 8th graders at the time so to see the older kids lose their minds and accept us was overwhelming and exciting. Ever since then we knew this is what we wanted to do.
2. How did you create your stage name - "Lumikools"?
A: I've had a bunch of other names but for some reason Lumikools stuck. It's pretty much a play on my personality. Lumi is short for Lumiere who was this Disney character from Beauty and the beast who was always in love and was funny. I later realized that Lumiere meant "Light" or "Fire" in French. I played around with it and came up with different meanings for it and ones that were true to me as possible. I want to be that positive light for others and share my music that I have passion and fire for and to motivate people to better themselves. I added the kools after because of my laid back personality.
3. What do you expect your audience or current fans to get from listening to your music?
A: I just want folks to feel good when they listen to my music. I want to put them in a good mood. Like if you had a tough long day at work or school, or even going through tough times you can hit play on any of my songs and hopefully feel a little better.
4. What goes through your head when you have that pen and pad or smart phone in front of you? Do you have dozens of ideas rushing through your mind that a song is all of sudden created or does it take longer?
A: I usually start writing whenever the inspiration hits. I can be anywhere at any given time. It can happen if I hear a beat that talks to me and I go from there or even when I'm just waking up in the morning. I'll pull out my iPhone and start writing. I feel my best material comes out at the spurt of the moment. I always feel the need to write something down even if it's just a line or two so I don't forget it and I can use it later for either a hook or verse. Some songs just pour out and some take a little longer.
5. I love your track "RUN" what was the inspiration to write that song?
A: Thank you! Even before I released this song I had the sample/loop in mind 2 years prior. But I never knew what to do with it. It was originally supposed to be a love song. The loop was from an Adriana Evans song called Seeing is Believing which is a dope song. It came out around the late 90s or early 2000s. Check it out when you get the chance. Eventually I got back to the song and sent it to Jollibeats and he edited the loop to fit the structure I wanted. As we kept playing the beat all I heard was "run, run" which was the same Run DMC acapella that The Pharcyde used for their hit” “Runnin”. That's a song I feel every hip hop head should know. I found the acapella on YouTube, we made it fit the loop and it just worked. And I had verses written for the song already and we just laid it down
6. Where do you see yourself in five years from now? Still creating or another career?
A: In 5 years I still see myself doing what I love which is music. I want to continue to inspire others. I don't care a lot about popularity, the views or likes. I'm definitely living in the moment and talking life as it comes along.
7. I have been promoting and following you for a little bit now, but for those not following - What are they missing out on?
A: I really appreciate what you're doing for local artists who are starving and trying to make a living off of music. For those not following I recently put out an EP called Birth of Kool. It's a 6 song project of joints I put out within the past year and a half. I just felt that I needed a project to put out and you can def check that out on my sound cloud.
8. I ask all of the local artists I interview, but if I were to look at your iPhone's music playlist or computer's playlist - What kind of genres or songs would I find?
A: Honestly not much lol but if you were to see my playlist, you'll see a mix of oldies, R&B, reggae. I usually just listen to everything on YouTube lol. But if I hear a dope song or album I'll def throw in on my playlist for sure.
9. Where can new followers find your music and follow you on your social media sites?
A: You can find my music on soundcloud.com/lumikools
