Questions:
1. What made you want to be a female emcee - Anyone inspire you to pursue this dream?
A: When I was about 17 or so I moved to a small beach town called Lompoc in Southern Cali. I had just finished high school then went on to take some college courses and met some friends who rapped and made music at a local studio. At that point I was already writing my own music, but learning from these really dope emcees I met, they inspired me to take my craft more serious and to take it a step further with professionalism. From then on I knew that this is what I've always wanted.
2. How did you decide that "Ashe" should be your stage name?
A: Well it's pretty simple. My first name is Ashley. I started out as "ASH" without the "E". But as time went on I started to write my name out with an "E" at the end just to give it a bit more of a spark. It also has a lot to do with my quote: "Where There's Fire There's ASHE" So its pretty much my nickname, no gimmicks.
3. Do you have any upcoming shows coming up?
A: I am performing at Abra Ca Dabs on March 26th and KushStock on April 16th. Two really huge festivals with an estimated 3,000-5,000 people in attendance!
4. Your song "I Tell Em" seems to be hella deep what was the intention of behind the song?
A: That song has a lot of different meanings behind it. I talk about a past relationship that was holding me back on pursing a career in music and certain people I used to kick it with that could have taken me in the wrong direction if I would of never cut ties. And then I talk about one of my brothers which he is a gang banger who has done a lot of crazy shit in his past. He would tell me all these different stories which I interpret in the song. Then the 2nd verse tells you where I am at now which is in a great relationship and telling people to stay on the right path.
5. Would you agree that we need more female emcees in this rap game? If a shy female emcee was reading this interview - what would your advice be to those who are afraid to show the world their songs?
A: Yeah, we can definitely use more female rappers, for sure. We have to all understand it isnt about competition with us since we're a rare breed. I'd say if your shy, just make sure you have you performance and stage presence down. Once you get up there all that shyness goes away if your confident about your craft. I'm more of an introvert and pretty reserved myself so take my word on that :)
6. I know you have an LP coming soon- how long did it take to put that project together and any special features on the tracks that we might know?
A: Since a couple obstacles came up these past few days I've deciding to make "VISIONZ" an EP with 5 songs and 1 bonus track while I work on my official album which will be released around September. So "VISIONZ" is now due for immediate release.
7. What do you expect your audience or current fans to get from listening to your music?
A: They'll get diversity. With this new EP, theres a track for everyone on there. Whether your feeling up, down, in love, feeling like turning up with your friends or if you need to listen to some raw hip-hop. Its all on there.
8. Where do you see yourself in five years from now, still performing?
A: YES OF COURSE! And making a decent living off of my music and touring.
9. I just began promoting you but for those not following what are they missing out on?
A: A dope female emcee with a dope flow, raw lyrics, and great diversity.
10. I ask all of the local artists I interview, but if I were able to look at your iPhone's playlist or computer's library - What kind of genres or songs would I find?
A: I listen to a lot of different genres of music. It can range from rock/pop like The Beatles, Pop music such as MJ, or Raw Hip-Hop like Nas, Conscious Rap such as Immortal Technique, New school Rap/Hip-hop like: Logic and G-Eazy, or R&B artists like Ne-yo. It all depends on the mood I am in at the time. I even listen to Marilyn Manson at times!
